Frog Orchid (Coeloglossum)

Overview

The Frog Orchid is also known as Long-Bracted Green Orchid. The more likely lime-intolerant Frog Orchid is a typical mountain meadows plant in Central and Southern Europe. However its range stretches far to the north. The further north the location is, in the more lower areas the species can be found. The Frog Orchid is rare in Germany and therefore the Frog Orchid was declared in 2004 to the ‚Orchid of the Year‘.

According to new molecular biological analyses the Frog Orchid should have a close relationship to the Marsh Orchids, so that the Frog Orchid has meanwhile been regrouped by some authors into the taxon Dactylorhiza.
