Giant Orchid (Barlia)

Overview

The Giant Orchid is a widespread, goodly orchid of the Mediterranean area. Because of its robust and goodly growth the plant already attracts attention from distance. Not infrequently you can find the Giant Orchid on roadsides, but also in neglected grassland, phrygana or nearby bushes. Usually the plants stand individually or in small groups, less frequently you can find larger amounts. The flowering time of the Giant Orchid occurs two to three weeks earlier than the main flowering time of the most Ophrys and Orchis species. Beside of the widespread Barlia robertiana exists also the very rare Barlia metlesicsiana which is endemic in Tenerife.
