Pineapple Guava (Acca sellowiana)

Overview

The Pineapple Guava, also Feijoa called, is is a member of the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae). It is an unpretentious pot plant with decorative flowers and tasty fruits.

Description

The evergreen plant grows as scrub respectively small tree (maximal high circa five metres). Opposing, on the underside greyish, small leaves arise from the brown-grey branches. Notable are the beautiful, reddish and brush-like flowers. Pineapple Guavas show a relative slight water demand and are hardy up to -8°C.

Culture

The culture is not difficult. Propagation from seeds, which are cleaned put into potting compost a few millimetres. These germinate after four to six weeks. Then regularly water, but intermediately let dry the soil surface. Water demand is rather slight. The Pineapple Guava gets at best a location outside during summer, not until temperatures about the freezing point it should be brought inside. There you should choose a light and cold place and water the plant only a few. In spring fruits emerge by self-fertilisation, which ripen until autumn. These are also in the case of full ripeness green.

Experiences

The Pineapple Guava is similar unproblematic as the Guava. All in all Pineapple Guavas are less sensitive to cold.

2010

The sowed seeds have germed quickly. Unfortunately the small plant is gone bust in winter.
