Species

Overview

I will present you on the next sites all carnivorous and protocarnivorous genera. The plants are grouped according to their trap mechanism.

However, at first some annotations to the culture of carnivorous plants. These distinguish considerably in their demands. Numerous speciess are very frugal and – if you heed some basic rules – hardly to kill. However, other species are such complex concerning their demands, that even experts can’t hardly cultivate these species for longer periods. I summarized some basic cultural hints on the site culture methods. On the sites of the different genera I will go into details of the specific demands. Unless otherwise mentioned it is not a literature study, but culture methods I have proved. According to these methods I cultivate or have cultivated my plants. If you cultivate your plants otherwise, keep your method if you achieve success with it. As is well known that there is more than one way to skin a cat. The success of one or two methods partly depends considerably on the right micro conditions which vary from place to place. At once it is sometimes confusing if you receive from different experts partly contradictory advices. At latest: suck it and see.

Systematics

The following systematics is oriented at: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III. Blue printed are protocarnivorous groups.

Annotations:
1 Triphyophyllum peltatum passes through three phases in lifetime. The plant is only carnivorous during its second phase.
2 Heliamphoras don’t produce digestion enzymes. Stricly speaking they are protocarnivorous plants.
3 Brocchinea reducta was quoted as a borderline carnivore for a long time. According to new studies it should however secrete digestion enzymes.
