Carnivorous Plants

Overview

This plant group lets the imagination of mankind run wild for centuries. Meanwhile it is ensured that man-eating plants don’t exist in the jungles – contrary to the science fiction of mid of the last century. If you are intensively involved with these plants they don’t loose any of their fascination, although fascination is found more in microcosm. A series of carnivorous plants developed sophisticated capture mechanisms during evolution. Some traps are able to one the most fast movements within the plant kingdom. Some traps need only a few hundreths of a second.

From a botanical point of view the group of carnivorous plants is heterogeneous, you can find carnivorous plants within several plant families. The evolutionary principle of convergence heterotrophic can be observed here. Carnivorous plant are united by their habitats. These have in common a lack of nutrients. The plants have entered by the capture of insects in particular an additional nitrogen source. Thus they have gained an advantage for the competition with other plants. However they are not forced to rely on an additional nitrogen source. Carnivorous plants are either parasitic nor heterotrophic plants. Especially cultivated specimens are not reliant on a feeding of insects because these plants have no natural competition with other plants.
